A variant accessory muscle of the gluteus maximus

چکیده
Introduction The gluteus maximus muscle is the largest and most powerful muscle in the gluteal region of the body. It is the most superficial of the three gluteal muscles, covering all of the others except for a small part of the gluteus medius muscle. The gluteus maximus slopes inferiolaterally at a 45° angle from the pelvis to the buttocks [1]. The approximate superior two-thirds of fibers of the gluteus maximus muscle insert laterally into the iliotibial tract (or iliotibial band) at its proximal end near the mid to inferior part of the tensor fasciae latae muscle. The remaining inferior fibers of the gluteus maximus insert into the gluteal tuberosity of the proximal femur. The iliotibial tract represents the lateral thickening of the fascia lata, forming a longitudinal band that passes over the greater trochanter and extends from the tubercle of the iliac crest to Gerdy’s tubercle on the lateral side of the proximal tibia. The iliotibial tract serves as an attachment site for the gluteus maximus and tensor fascia latae muscles. With the gluteus maximus muscle, the iliotibial tract stabilizes the hip joint by preventing lateral displacement of the proximal end of the femur [2].

Effects of electroacupuncture on pain, functional disability and ultrasonographic changes of gluteus maximus muscle in non-specific chronic low back pain patients with gluteus maximus muscle trigger points
Introduction: Chronic low back pain is one of the major musculoskeletal problems. The presence of trigger points in the gluteus maximus muscle is a factor in increasing back pain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of electro acupuncture on pain, functional disability and ultrasonographic changes of gluteus maximus muscle in patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain with tri...
متن کاملAn accessory gluteus maximus muscle.
The gluteus maximus muscle is the largest, heaviest and most coarsely fibred muscle in the body which provides a thick quadrilateral pad over the ischial tuberosity. Structural changes in this muscle are critical to the evolutionary advance toward an upright stance during walking. Although its bilaminar nature' and its deep and superficial segmentation2) are a part of our current knowledge, var...

Background and purpose: Impaired function of trunk extensor endurance is known as a risk factor and clinical sign for low-back pain. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between selected back muscles fatigue index and hyperlordosis. Materials and methods: This case-control study was carried out in 12 males diagnosed with hyperlordosis and 12 with normal lumbar curve. Surface...
متن کاملThe effects of gluteus maximus and abductor hallucis strengthening exercises for four weeks on navicular drop and lower extremity muscle activity during gait with flatfoot
[Purpose] The purpose of the present study is to examine the effects of abductor hallucis and gluteus maximus strengthening exercises on pronated feet. [Subjects and Methods] The present study was conducted with 18 adults without no history of surgery on the foot or ankle. One group performed both gluteus maximus strengthening exercises and abductor hallucis strengthening exercises, while the o...
متن کاملThe human gluteus maximus and its role in running.
The human gluteus maximus is a distinctive muscle in terms of size, anatomy and function compared to apes and other non-human primates. Here we employ electromyographic and kinematic analyses of human subjects to test the hypothesis that the human gluteus maximus plays a more important role in running than walking. The results indicate that the gluteus maximus is mostly quiescent with low level...
